When Answering the Phone

When a family member calls, i would say hello? and would always be greeted with "have you eaten yet?" When i say "yes" it sounds as if ive fufilled their dreams by feeding myself. If i responded with "no" i would be barraged by questions along the lines of: " when are you going to eat?", "What are you going to eat?", " Will you go eat?"

i find it funny that we had that lesson in class today about how its joyful to eat rogether. I seems as though people are also happy when other people around them eat too.

We Changed Our Minds

Chelsea and I changed our minds and decided to make these cookies instead because we didn't want to get all the ingredients for the previous recipes. These were harder to make than we thought. Baking is extremely hard. All the ingredients were suppose to be perfectly measured and it was hard since i lost my teaspoon measuring thing. While we were blending all the ingredients together my mixer started to smoke out of the back. We really don't know how we managed to do that but the overall mission was a success. Chelsea has the pictures of our journey on her blog.

What?! >:O

From the title of this blog I'm sure you can assume one of the videos I had watched. Animal cruelty. Seriously?? That shit is just crazy. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't watch it till the end. I couldn't. I never understood why there were so many animal cruelty prevention groups and why there was so much surrounding animal cruelty. I only knew it as animal testing and mutilations because products were tested on animals. I never knew that the meat that shows up in my food came from these kind of places. Please tell me that there are better places to get the food and that this was only the worst place to get meat because i really can't go vegetarian. I have always thought about it but i never could bring myself to do it because of my large consumption of meat. If i were to become a vegetarian, I don't think my family would support me because they have always been worried about my health since i was young. My culture is also very meat centered. On special occasions such as birthdays or Chinese New Year, a chicken and roasted pig are placed on the table for praying so they can be blessed before we eat them. I highly doubt that having a blessing will take away the pain they went through to get on our dinner table. Is it better to get poultry from a small poultry place where the poultry is treated better? Because my mom and dad are always getting poultry from a live poultry place 10 minutes from our house. I feel that it is better because the animals are not tortured as in the video. The animals are not given the steroids to grow them. On the other hand I think it's just the same. A small poultry place had to have gotten their animals from somewhere. They are just the slaughter house of small proportions. This video had a great impact on me. I really got me thinking. I didn't like it. I feel as if I'm put into a tough position. I feel guilty that I eat meat and I don't feel as though I will stop.

Another video i watched was the Meatrix. This series of videos was similar to the animal cruelty video. I brought light to the watchers eye about what really goes on in the real world with meat. It is definitely not like the pastures on television where animals move and live freely. This video along with the animal cruelty video brought on a cruel truth. When I got upstate with my family, I can look out the window and see cows grazing in the grass and they seem to be enjoying themselves. I can also go down the road of the house where the neighbor has a small chicken pen and the chicken are always running freely across the lawn. I may be able to see these things as we go but i think about in the end, they die. They die for the benefit of humanity. When we go grocery shopping and we go to the meat section and I see all the meat packaged all nice and neatly, I don't think about the dirty dirty past that the meat went through to get into those shiny plastic containers. Speaking on the lines of nice and neat and free animals, there is this commercial on TV about happy cows in California producing healthy milk. They say that the best milk comes from happy cows in California. Real California Milk. What a fucking lie! I seen the part where the cows are impregnated every year and the calves are stripped from them the moment they're born because the workers need the damn milk for a profit. And after the cows have been used until they are no longer able to produce milk, they are auctioned for slaughter. And then there's that stupid Perdue commercial about healthy and happy chicken with no steroids, I'm not sure if i should even believe that anymore. The guy on TV may look nice but he could be just the same cold hearted killer as in the the videos. These corporate people know how to sell their shit and make it look like the best stuff on earth. That's fucking bullshit.

I also watched the Pollan vs. Colbert video. I didn't get much from that video, it was just informative on how the majority of food in the world is fake. Its all processed and that we should eat more "real" stuff. But does Pollan realize that the organic stuff sold in groceries and supermarkets are expensive and not everyone can afford it even if they did want to go healthy. With our economy anyone would be lucky and fairly well off to be able to eat organic foods all the time. Sure we can plant our own but who has time when every one's worried about their finances in this falling economy? Pollan is right to suggest that we should go more natural on our food habits but he has to keep in mind of the less fortunate people who must work hard to make their much needed money. They will hardly have to time to put proper nutrition into their bodies.

Response to Pollan 1

I agree with the arguments stated in the first few pages in Omnivore's Dilemma by Micheal Pollan that Americans are so obsessed with health that many of us are actually confused about the way we should really be eating. Once Americans are confused about what to do we turn to the "experts" on the subject matters to tell us what to do. When we get anxious with what foods we should eat we turn to nutritionists thinking that they would know whats best for us by suggesting the same plan to everyone who asks but just in a slight variation. Pregnant women do just about the same thing when they are in labor, they get anxious and scared so they seek medical attention from money loving doctors who suggest to them the labor process of the hospital that is provided for every pregnant woman who comes through. Little do Americans know that they should know what is best for them in terms of their body because they know themselves best without medical interference for both cases of nutritional and birth.

I would say that i follow whatever my mom tells me to eat but i don't usually. She suggests that i should be eating certain things but i just eat whatever i feel like it. Lucky for me though i like eating all kinds of foods from all food groups so i guess i have a pretty balanced meal plan. As for my mom she follows everything that's in the newspapers and infomercials and the suggestions of her friends. She still eats whatever she wants sometimes but she also curbs her diet a lot because of what she thinks she "shouldn't" be eating. She is constantly watching her weight because she thinks she a little bit on the chubby side but might i say, although she may be a little big for her height, she has been able to manage her weight perfectly. She hasn't lost or gained any weight, she has pretty balanced meals plans everyday and she has a regular exercise routine. I would have to say that my whole family eats the same way. Were a generally healthy family with healthy meal plans that consist of all the food groups everyday.

What We Eat (colaboration of me and Yazmin)

Yazmin and I both eat similar foods. We eat an equal serving of all the food groups every week. We didnt get very far. We got distracted by the fact that Oprah is buying everyone lunch at KFC. By everyone we mean all of AMERICA. Guess she doesnt know what to do better with her money. So now we're off printing out coupons for KFC. This should give you a hint of how we eat. We're pretty much family, me and Yazmin. Bye now.

May Day

On Friday our class discussion started with how many Americans don’t remember what May Day was. I just got up to ask my brother and sister in law if they knew what May Day was and they said it was a distress call, a call for help. In their minds, it has no relation to what May Day actually is but if thought about technically there is a relationship. Workers were kind of putting out a distress call from their labor unions. They were in distress with all the work they had.

May Day was a day where all workers protested to the long hours that they had to work. Those workers always wanted to remember May Day as their day off but that tradition had slowly worn off because of the government’s influence on the American people. The government gradually weaned Americans off of the idea of taking off on May Day by giving us Labor Day instead. They gave us a day to have BBQs and enjoy ourselves in the sun. Labor Day was meant to show appreciation for American workers instead of having us take May Day off because of the little appreciation that were shown to labor unions.

Food Cultures- Home and Corporate

When at home, I eat dinner with the rest of my family at the dinner table. Dinner is usually at the same time everyday. Most of the time we eat home cooked Chinese food, non of that Americanized fake Chinese food made with msg. But we mix it up sometimes with Italian food or Spanish food. When we don’t have anything to eat at home, we go out to eat Japanese or Vietnamese or Indian, etc. My family and I eat a variety of foods. I would say that we are part of mainstream America. We go out to eat but when we do cook at home, we all eat together as seen in TV and movies.

When we eat at home, dinner is usually ready within half an hr to and hr. That is a much longer time than that of a regular restaurant we would go to. I would assume this is because at home, we have to make our food out of scratch while restaurants already have the food premade and just needs to heat it up on the stove. A lot of the ingredients at a restaurant is already prepared but at home, the ingredients are being pulled out of the fridge and cupboards as we cook.

I personally think that eating at home is way healthier than eating out. For one thing I know exactly what is going in the food that my family cooks. But in a restaurant I am not walking in and out of the kitchen to see what’s cooking like I can do at home.

Also at home, we can customize our food to the way that we like it. When we order a dish from a restaurant the food comes as the way that the chef made it.

In the end I feel that my family is very much like the family that is seen on mainstream television. We always eat dinner together as a family whether we are at home or in a restaurant.

Refrigerator Assignment

Milk
Eggs
Yogurt
Oranges
Salad
Salad dressings
Juice
Jelly
Veggies
Bbq sauce
Ketchup
Butter
Cream cheese
Asian sauces
Asian herbs
Mustard
Spam
Mayo
Tartar sauce
Hot sauce
Jalapeño peppers
Cheese
Apple sauce
Soup
Popcorn kernels
Pasta sauce

Based on the substances in my fridge I would say that my family’s food habits are pretty Americanized. We have a lot of perishable food items in the fridge but there are a lot more non perishable Asian products in the cabinets of my kitchen. It doesn’t look like we ever have a lot of stuff in our fridge but somehow we’re always having full meals every night. We also have many variations of sauces and this goes to show that sauces make up the taste of everything. Without a good sauce, a dish would not be good. The product in the dish, such as vegetables, may be good but if the sauce it’s made in is not good then it doesn’t matter that the vegetables are good and healthy.

Break Hw- Health Insurance

My family has Medicare and my mom told me that the health care isn’t that bad. So far insurance has covered mostly everything we needed. The only things that weren’t covered where some prescriptions. When I had braces, insurance covered it. When my mom gave birth to me, insurance covered it. When my sister was sick, insurance covered it. When my brother dislocated his wrist, insurance covered it. When I asked my mom if there were any heavy medical bills, she said that we were pretty well off in terms of medical care. I know this is definitely not the case for most Americans but according to my mom, we had “wonderful experiences where we were healed by loving doctors with no worries about payment.” I really don’t understand how we are so lucky especially since my parents came to the US with 2 small children and really had to work herd to make ends meet without knowing any English. When I would ask my mom how she did it she’d always answer with “hard work”.

My family’s experiences are way way way different from the experiences spoke about by Michael Moore’s SiCKO. Moore told us about the hardships that everyone who was lower than upper class faced when it came to healthcare. The hardships he mentioned should have presumed that my family suffered when they came to the US but they didn’t. They had more trouble with their neighbors than they did with money and healthcare. If you were to ask me how my family ever made it so easily on the salaries of a small restaurant chef and a back alley factory worker the only way I’d be able to answer you in with the words “hard work”.

Summarizing Week’s Lessons on Poverty and Wealth in the US

A couple of weeks back we played musical chairs in class. The chairs were suppose to represent the opportunities available to everyone in the United States. While a few of us had chairs with our names on them, others had to struggle to find a chair for themselves. I was one of the people who had a couple of chairs to myself so I had a chair available to me that no one else could sit in. I was one of the more privileged people who did not have to work hard to the main goal of getting a chair. This relates to how some Americans are born into wealth and therefore do not need to work hard to get what they want, those are the people with their own chairs. While these Americans are so fortunate to be able to survive on minimal work, others work hard and still struggle to survive.

In America people are constantly fighting and competing with each other to find a way to make money to support their families. Americans are fighting because there are on a certain amount of opportunities available to everyone. This would be an example of a more equal fight for opportunities. We played another version of musical chairs unlike the first version. This second version involved 21 people with 20 chairs and two people always had to fight for the last chair.

In the first example, it wasn’t the Americans’ fault that they are not able to get one of the limited opportunities because some had already taken them. But in the second example, it was the Americans’ fault if they were not able to get an opportunity because it shows that they did not work hard enough. It is always the person who works harder who will win in the end.
